Bulked Up

A high school athlete steroid testing program cost taxpayers $6 million, but found the purported problem wasn’t all it was cracked up to be.

In fact, only four athletics tested positive out of more than 10,000 tested. State Sen. Dan Patrick of Houston has called it a “Colossal waste of taxpayer money” while supporters say it has had a deterrent affect.

I hate to say it, but the Fort Worth Star Telegram editorial board is right on this one: “It is time to close the book on this expensive exercise by declaring that steroid use is minuscule or conceding the program lacks the ability to detect the true magnitude of the problem.”

Keeping 1 kid out of 2,500 off steroids is important, but just not the job the state. Can anyone say, “parental responsibility”?
