Ringing The Tax Bell?

Cecil Bell

Taxpayers learned today they are going to have to keep careful watch on at least one incoming legislator who just seven months ago pledged to oppose “any and all” tax hikes and new taxes.

In a panel hosted by the Texas Tribune, incoming State Rep. Cecil Bell (R-Magnolia) hemmed and hawed when asked about tax hikes. Hopefully he isn’t really reconsidering a door he told his voters was closed.

Mr. Bell said that he doesn’t “like to be put in boxes.” Interesting…

Remember, this is the same Mr. Bell who signed a pledge to his constituents to “oppose and vote against any and all efforts to increase taxes.”

On April 24, Mr. Bell — then a candidate for the Texas House — signed (.pdf) the Taxpayer Protection Pledge.

Mr. Bell did finally say he was against raising taxes for now, and was against raising taxes… But only after pushed (with no small laughter coming from the audience).
