Time For Town Halls

Joe Straus
Given the latest exposé of Speaker Straus and his teams’ disdain for conservatives, it’s now more important than ever for the grassroots to demand better leadership from their state representative.

With the general election now behind us, Texas is now only two months away from the start of the 83rd Legislative Session – the tone of which will be determined by the very first vote cast in state’s lower chamber. Will Republicans uphold the party platform and conduct town halls on House leadership?

At this year’s State Republican Convention, grassroots conservatives made it very clear they are unhappy with the current leadership of the Texas House – so much so that the party platform was re-written to demand town hall meetings with their state representatives about it:

“We call for the Republican members of the Texas House of Representatives after the November election, leading up to the Legislative session, to hold public town hall meetings in which the voters can express their wishes and thoughts about the leadership for the 83rd Session.”

Given the latest exposé of Speaker Straus and his teams’ distain for conservatives, it’s now more important than ever for the grassroots to demand better leadership from their state representative.

But as the grassroots know all too well, when Republicans get to Austin, they often forget the expectations laid out for them in the party platform and by their voters.

With reports of Straus’ team actively seeking commitments for his re-election to the speakership, conservatives cannot afford to sit idly by without demanding these town halls from their representatives.

We’re working to gather a list of Republican representatives who do indeed plan to meet with their constituents about this issue. We’ll provide updates as they become available.
