Legislature Passes 2012-13 Budget

The Texas House and Senate today passed the 2012-2013 budget. It is a tangible demonstration that a majority of legislators heard the message voters were sending in November, and have continued to send all session.

Texans expected a budget that reasonably lives within the people’s means, didn’t raise taxes, or raid the rainy day fund. Legislators today delivered on that promise, passing a budget that will serve the long-term interests of Texas and protect our state’s growing economy.

One can always find areas upon which a budget can and should be improved, but tonight legislators did the right thing by working with sound fiscal principles on behalf of the people of Texas.

This new budget spends $15.1 billion less than the previous biennium’s budget. The House approved it 97 to 53, the Senate 20 to 11.
