As a taxpayer, I believe it’s important to have easily accessible information about the debt held by my local taxing entities in an easy-to-find location.
Texas is second only to New York in local debt per capita. Sadly, information about outstanding debt or bond proposals put forth by local taxing entities are available only by open records requests, and only to those who know what to look for.
HB 14 and SB 14 seek to make local governments more transparent by requiring this information to be posted online and on any ballot proposition seeking to pass additional bonds.
I strongly urge you – as my state legislator — to stand with the Comptroller in supporting these commonsense transparency measures to make sure local taxpayers aren’t left in the dark.
