Best of 2017: State Rep. Jonathan Stickland
Since joining the Texas House in 2013, State Rep. Jonathan Stickland (R–Bedford) has been known for having some of biggest guns and heaviest armor in the legislature. To do what he does, he needs both. A conservative stalwart, Stickland isn’t exactly known for picking his battles. Instead, the happy warrior takes the field in virtually all of them worth fighting.
Stickland was on the frontlines of nearly every fight this session and was a mainstay at the Texas House’s back microphone debating against bills that would threaten Texans’ liberties or expand the size of government. The bane of House Speaker Joe Straus, Stickland carefully combs through each Local & Consent Calendar and is likely the lawmaker responsible for killing the most bad bills this session.
As the biggest personality in the Texas Legislature, Stickland both dishes and receives the most heat from his fellow lawmakers. Texans should thank him for standing in the gap and fighting to defend their liberty.
