Tony McDonald serves as General Counsel to Empower Texans.
A licensed and practicing attorney, Tony graduated from The University of Texas School of Law with his J.D. and passed the Texas bar exam in 2012. Before attending law school, Tony graduated in 2008 from The University of Texas with a degree in Economics and Government. He then went to work during the 81st Texas Legislature as a Legislative Aide for State Representative Wayne Christian. In his role as Legislative Aide, Tony specialized in parliamentary procedure and identifying points-of-order on targeted legislation. After law school, Tony returned to the Capitol to serve as Chief of Staff to State Representative Jonathan Stickland during the 83rd Texas Legislature. In that role, he helped propel Representative Stickland to prominence as one of the boldest conservative voices in the Texas Capitol.
Tony got involved in politics in 2005 as a freshman at the University of Texas when he joined Young Conservatives of Texas. As a sophomore he led the YCT chapter at UT as Chapter Chairman, growing the chapter’s membership while conducting national headline grabbing activism. After serving his term as Chapter Chairman, Tony was appointed to YCT’s state board, first serving as Vice Chairman for Chapter Development and then as Senior Vice Chairman for Legislative Affairs. In that role, he helped organize YCT’s candidate interviews and endorsements and led YCT in creating its legislative agenda and carrying out its lobbying efforts for the 81st and 82nd Texas Legislatures. Following each session he led a team of members in developing YCT’s legislative ratings. Through his years with Young Conservatives of Texas, Tony has volunteered on numerous campaigns and served as a delegate to three Republican state conventions.
While attending UT, Tony proudly helped cohost a local political talk radio show, Down Ballot Radio, along with two liberal and moderate friends. The show specialized in hard-hitting coverage of local and state politics and lampooning Austin mayoral twitter feeds.
Tony resides in Austin and attends St. Paul Lutheran Church. In his spare time he enjoys mixology and smoking meats on his Big Green Egg. Tony can be followed on Twitter through his handle, @tweettonymac.
